Many people on this forum are avid gardeners and don't need lettuce instructions. But this is an odd little vacation/transport tip.
We spent a weekend near a lake, and had to buy groceries. I stopped at an Amish stand, which was also selling potted vegetables.
A six-pack of lettuce plants was $1.70. I took it back to where we stayed, and we had lettuce-on-demand. The plants came home and still sit on my windowsill, producing. I didn't have to plant, weed, transplant, or tend... just water. It already paid for itself, so when it stops producing, I won't feel guilty, like I did when many seedlings died.
(I also bought pickled eggs in case we had a mealtime where we couldn't find protein.)
